When executed correctly an Instagram page can help you to reach a larger audience and be discovered by your target market. Instagram also allows you to directly communicate with your followers (customers). This is extremely powerful in gaining feedback on how to improve your product or service to be the best it can be for your ideal customer.
So, how do you get started on this amazing platform? We’ve put together 10 tips to get you started.
1. Make sure your Instagram account is set up as a business page
As with any form of marketing, analytics and data are everything. To analyse the data of your account make sure it is set up as a business account. This information will not be available until you reach 100 followers on Instagram. Instagram analytics will show you:
- the most popular days and times to be posting;
- user demographics such as gender, age, and location;
- how many people are viewing your profile; and
- analytics on button clicks.
2. Have a social media strategy in place
Every post on Instagram should have a reason. A social media strategy will ensure that every post that you send out has a purpose. The purpose may be to highlight a product, humanise the brand or simply create awareness for your brand. 3. Post visually appealing images
Instagram is a platform known for its visual appeal. This is what the users of the platform expect from accounts, especially brands. Choose a colour scheme and stick to it; this should be reflective of your branding.
4. Post high-quality images
Just like visually appealing images are expected on the platform, so is high-quality content. With the camera quality on phones nowadays there is no excuse to have grainy images on your feed. Not only are they less likely to receive engagement, they also reflect negatively on your brand.
5. Be consistent with posting content
Consistency is key to growth and continued engagement. Your social media strategy and analytics of your account will determine how often you will be posting on your platform. We recommend posting 5-7 times a week.
6. Understand your brand’s hashtags
Hashtags are key to your account growth during the early days. Use hashtags that are relevant to your audience and that reflect your company offering. Do some research on hashtags that receive the most engagement with your target market and use these in your posts. Be sure to only use hashtags that are relevant to you and avoid saturated hashtags such as ‘#love’.
7. Interact with your followers
Don’t leave comments unanswered on your page. These are opportunities for you to build rapport. Go through posts on your relevant hashtags and location tags to find people who may be interested in your product; like and comment on their posts and follow these people. This will increase your exposure and also get you on the radar of people who may not have heard of you before.
8. Do NOT buy followers
No matter how tempting, do not do this! These followers will not translate to engagement on your page, which will become very obvious to people who view your page. Instagram is also cracking down on accounts who buy followers putting your account at risk of being shut down.
9. Make sure your bio section is properly completed
You have 150 characters to tell your followers who you are and why they will benefit from following you. Use it wisely – emoji’s help. Don’t forget to add UTM tracking on your bio link.
10. Test your content to see what resonates most with your followers
Always be testing. Play around with single images, boomerangs, videos, and albums to see what your followers like. Note engagement metrics such as likes and comments.
